Language Preservation

Rajasthani Bhasha & the Fight for Constitutional Recognition

The demand for the inclusion of Rajasthani Bhasha in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India has been a long-standing movement supported by scholars, writers, social leaders, and members of the Rajasthani community across the world. Despite being spoken by millions and enriched with a deep literary heritage — the largest Rajasthani dictionary compiled by Dr. Sitaram Lalas contains more than 210,000 words — the language still awaits the recognition it rightfully deserves.

A landmark moment came on 4 July 2003 at the First International Rajasthani Convention in New York, where a memorandum was submitted to the then Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Shri Ashok Gehlot, urging constitutional recognition. Within just 51 days, the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution recommending inclusion — yet more than two decades later, the matter remains pending at the national level.

In 2011, GARC Founder Prem Bhandari — as International Convener of the Akhil Bhartiya Rajasthani Bhasha Manyta Sangharsh Samiti — led a delegation to the President of India, Smt. Pratibha Patil, at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The delegation included senior advocate Shri Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, who later went on to become the Vice President of India.

Rajasthani is not merely a language — it is a living expression of the culture, traditions, folklore, and identity of Rajasthan. GARC continues to champion this cause, advocating across India and internationally, working towards the day Rajasthani finally receives the constitutional recognition it truly deserves.

Key Milestones

  • 2003 First International Rajasthani Convention, New York — memorandum to CM Ashok Gehlot. Rajasthan Assembly passes unanimous resolution within 51 days.
  • 2010 Meeting at Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur, hosted by Shri Gaj Singh II to strengthen the campaign.
  • 2011 Delegation to President Pratibha Patil at Rashtrapati Bhavan — led by Prem Bhandari with Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Jagdeep Dhankhar.
  • Today 22 languages recognised in the Eighth Schedule — Rajasthani still awaits inclusion. The movement continues with dedication, unity, and determination.

The Land

The Spirit of Rajasthan

Rajasthan — the Land of Kings — is India's largest state and one of its most culturally rich. From the pink walls of Jaipur to the blue city of Jodhpur, the golden fort of Jaisalmer to the sacred lakes of Pushkar, every corner tells a story of valour, artistry, and resilience.

Our cuisine — Dal Baati Churma, Ker Sangri, Ghewar — carries the flavours of the desert. Our music — the soul-stirring kamaycha and haunting folk songs of the Manganiyars — echoes across generations. Our textiles — Bandhani, block prints, the vibrant colours of Rajasthani turbans — are recognised the world over.

This is the heritage GARC exists to preserve. Not as a museum piece, but as a living, breathing culture that adapts and thrives wherever Rajasthanis call home.
